I've been teaching here for nearly a year now. Feel I've learned a thing or two in the process, yeah? Like that disciplining a student for poor performance, disruptive behaviour, or even disrespect is one thing that most people, I think, can support as both the right and duty of the educator.

I can't imagine many who would support unprovoked humiliation and terrorizing, which may masquerade as discipline, but is well-known to be anything but.

Can it now? Please do explain how it was useful for you to torment a young child about an experience she'd rather forget? How could either you or she possibly benefit?

Well, how I benefit is obvious. No one dares act up in my class, do they?

And as for her...the pure have greater burdens, and must be consequently stronger, more ruthless. Weakness must be eradicated.

It's entirely necessary, that hardening of the heart. Painful, maybe, but she'll learn how to dry her tears.

That's what her mother learned to do, after all. Admirable woman.

The minds are our concern, not their hearts. No, that business is best left to the parents. As you point out, Mrs Lestrange is doing an admirable job there already.

Be mindful of the heart you harden, Professor, lest it one day harden against your good self in resentment.

She came to me last night quite upset. In lieu of her father, I expect. The class was transfiguring slippers into rabbits. Perhaps you can imagine what Carrow chose to goad her about?

Well, not having heard from you, I did hold my tongue.

You know Lucius and I believe strongly that they must learn to fight their own battles, on their own terms - at least, for Harry and Draco. Hydra's such a timid thing it's difficult not to put one's own wand in but she, too, must find the strength within herself to look after her own person first. That includes knowing how to avoid getting onto the wrong side of the likes of Carrow.

I wish we could tell them they've only a short while longer to withstand that menace.
